SYNOPSIS Set against the backdrop of 21st century China, the filmmaker searches along the banks of the northern Yellow River and in remote villages in southwest Yunnan ,  for the last survivors of Bound Feet. Told through the first person narrative of the filmmaker who was raised by her bound-feet grandmother, the film captures otherwise lost voices and the haunting memory of 12 bound-feet Chinese women of ages ranging from 78 to 106, including that of the 90 year-old cut paper folk artist, Ms. Yang Hui Xiu. Through the exclusive portrayal of women of a bygone era, the film reveals one of the darkest secrets of Chinese civilization and women’s changing destiny in a society once, and perhaps still, dominated by men.

Joanne Cheng is the award winning China-born intercultural filmmaker known for her documentary portraits of contemporary China: CHINA GOLD RUSH 2000; MAMA’S GOLD,The Orphans of Shangri-la 2003GOLDEN LOTUS,The Legacy of Bound Feet 2006; Cheng’s latest works include a meditative docu-drama on abortion and identityC/O BUTTERFLY(2015),  and RED FAREWELL (2019), an investigation on longevity in rural China; Cheng is currently in development of three feature film scripts:  PHOENIX NEST, a historical drama fantasy.   JOY GUANYIN, a fantasy action based on a Buddhist legend of the fertility goddess; PHOENIX UP, a intercultural Romance adventure;   

Born in Beijing, Cheng was the  English speaking TV journalist/anchorwoman for China Central Television (CCTV) directing and hosting a entertainment program from1987-88. Cheng immigrated to the United States in late 80s and studied filmmaking and graduated with MA in Film/TV/Communication Arts from University of Maryland in 1990.

Before embarking on her independent filmmaking career starting 2000, Cheng has worked as a bilingual advertising/PR consultant under her own banner East-West Corridor Communications Inc.(based in New York) supervising conceptual strategic repositioning and designs and producing print, video and multimedia and creative marketing tools for corporate America/Fortune 500 companies doing business in China and Chinese markets worldwide.

Cheng’s US-China TV/Film projects over the past two decades include providing journalism /investigative reports for networks including ABC 20/20, MTV/Asia, publicity for PBS WLIW21 and Chinese film industry. For example: Cheng was the PR/ bilingual Publicist /Translator/Interpreter for Chinese film delegation led by Zhao Shi and Han Sanping visiting Hollywood in1998; Cheng was also the bilingual publicist and promotional host for the national syndicated program CHINESE AMERICANS on PBS/WLIW21 in Nov, 2000. In addition, Cheng also did book licensing for Mario Puzo’s novels to Mainland China publisher in 1995 and later film licensing providing Hollywood films to Chinese screens in late 90s. Cheng’s work included translating/adapting scripts/narration/voiceover.

As an associate professor of Cinema and Television, Cheng taught film/TV production and film aesthetics at New York Institute of Technology; Hong Kong Baptist University-Beijing Normal University United International College (07-09) and Beijing Foreign Studies University (09-13) where Cheng was the curator and host for the annual Intercultural Film Forum.

Starting 2014, Cheng has been dedicating her bilingual writing/directing/producing expertise for independent feature films and co-productions.

Cheng’s unique Chinese American experience in intercultural communications and filmmaking over the past two decades has positioned her to create important cinematic works targeting global audience.

程娟, 跨文化获奖双语导演兼制片人 以双语纪录片和跨文化电影知名-中国人文肖像《东方淘金》2000,《金娃娃》2003和《中国金莲》2006 展映世界十几个国家的国际电影节和播放于美国公共电视。 《一蝶》- 子宫狂想曲2015 是关于流产生死畅想的低成本独立电影作品。程娟 最新纪录片作品为探寻长寿秘诀的民俗写真《喜丧》2018 。

程娟生于北京。原中央电视台英语记者兼主持人。1988年赴美深造影视获马里兰传媒艺术硕士后移居纽约。程娟在从2000年从事独立电影创作以前曾于90年代初程娟创建的东西走廊国际文化传媒有限公司(纽约)帮助美国国际公司进入中国市场 提供中英双语广告公关咨询和商业影视制作,翻译口译配音;在中美影视业界,则进行双语电视深度采编,版权代理发行等业务。1998年中国电影代表团(赵实、韩三平、童刚领队)出访好莱坞,程娟为美国英文媒体公关顾问并双语策划纽约中国电影节;2000年11月为美国电视片《美籍华人》推广的全美中文媒体公关顾问;1995年程娟代理美国著名作家马里奥普佐《教父》续集三部曲进入中国。

程娟为影视副教授(2005-2013)分别在纽约理工大学传媒学院影视系和北京师范大学香港浸会大学国际联合学院影视系和北京外国语大学英语学院教学电影美学,美国电影与文化,国际纪录片制作,导演艺术和剪辑艺术等课程。程娟是北外每年一度《电影论坛》创始人和双语主持人。

从2014年起,程娟做为中英双语编剧导演和制片人全力投身跨文化电影创作。程娟正在双语编剧基于程家家史的历史故事片《四合之象》魔幻片《欢喜观音》和爱情探险动作片《东凤西飞》。程娟将推出纪录片中国人文肖像后三部曲的两部作品: 关注中国自闭症主题的《金童闭女》2019;和西方人解析孔子儒学哲思的《问祖》2019。
