To defy historical amnesia, Chinese American author filmmaker J.J. Cheng returns to China, her birthplace, embarking on a personal pilgrimage into the country’s vast interior in search of her ancestral roots through tracing the life of her grandfather, Cheng Zhen Jun (程振鈞, 1888–1932), one of China’s early modernizers.

From Beijing to the Confucian town of Wuyuan; to Hangzhou, cradle of the 1929 West Lake Expo that propelled China toward the modern world; from the once war-torn Anqing along the Yangtze River to the winding route of the Huang Hui Highway, Cheng’s journey becomes one of profound revelation. It culminates in the discovery of relics from the long-lost Cheng Family Tomb at the foot of auspicious Mount Hui in Wuxi — a chilling moment of truth in which the enduring Cheng spirit suddenly reveals itself, calling forth the awakening of a nation’s soul.

With a distinct auteur voice, Cheng’s reflective and meditative cinéma vérité narrative is at once urgent and revealing, casting light on a China at a civilizational crossroads—vibrant with modernity, yet suspended between amnesia and remembrance.

“ Daring and alarming work.
J.J. Cheng teaches us a lesson of the century.
She dares to go and find the desecrated ancestral tomb.
These histories must be seen to be understood.”
James Buden

The Odyssey of a Confucian Modernizer and a Generation of Republican Pioneers Who Crossed the World to Rebuild China

The Odyssey of a Confucian Modernizer and a Generation of Republican Pioneers who crossed the world to Rebuild China

Coming 2027

A East- West Tale

For more than two millennia, China understood the world through the civilizational concept of Tianxia—“All Under Heaven—viewing itself as the center of civilization and the cultural heart of an East Asian order shaped by hierarchy, ritual, and Confucian values. oblivious of the rise of Western industrial and maritime powers in the nineteenth century. It was not until China’d defeat in The Opium War of 1840 that China realized the global balance of civilization and power had fundamentally changed. As the old Tianxia order began to crumble, a generation of Chinese pioneers crossed oceans in search of knowledge, enlightenment, science, and technology, determined to forge a path toward modernity and national rebirth. From Yung Wing, the first Chinese graduate of Yale University, to Guo Songtao, China’s first minister to Britain, to Yan Fu, who introduced Western thought and modern philosophy to China, and finally to Cheng Zhen Jun’s generation of Republican modernizers, A historic chain of Chinese pioneers journeyed abroad in a profound civilizational quest for science and enlightenment—the first and perhaps hardest effort to rescue and reinvent China, and to reclaim its place in the modern world.
