CHENG LEGACY Synopsis
A name strikes like lightning: Cheng Zhen Jun (1888–1932) – one of China’s early modernizers, a grandfather she never knew, yet whose unseen force had already shaped her path. On the eve of the COVID-19 lockdown, Chinese American filmmaker J.J. Cheng returns to China, her birthplace, and sets out on a personal pilgrimage into the country’s vast interior to recover what was never told before it is lost forever. From Beijing into her ancestral origins in Wuyuan, to Hangzhou, where the 1929 West Lake Expo once introduced China to the world; from the Yangtze River through Anqing to the winding road of Huang Hui Highway, Cheng’s journey culminates in the discovery of some of the most buried truths as she uncovers the relics of Cheng Tomb along the anicent Grand Canal, Wuxi, China.
With a distinct auteur voice, Cheng’s reflective and meditative cinéma vérité narrative is at once urgent and revealing, casting light on a China at a civilizational crossroads—vibrant with modernity, yet suspended between amnesia and remembrance.
