In spring 1888, Cheng Zhen Jun was born in the ancient town of Wuyun, Anhui province, into the prestigious Cheng  family known for its generations of Confucian scholars. He entered Anhui Higher College in Anqing in 1905 and was mentored by Yan Fu, China’s preeminent thinker and translator of Evolution and Ethics; Upon Graduation, Cheng went to UK in 1909 and studied Civil Engineering at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. Cheng returned to China in 1916 upon the invitation of Cai Yuanpei. Cheng taught at Peking University for almost a decade, during which Cheng purchased the Courtyard of Fuyoujie#6 in 1923 and lived there with his family and his mother. Cheng soon was appointed as the Minister of Development of Zhejiang Province. Cheng successfully founded and managed the West Lake Expo in 1929. In 1932, Cheng went to serve his home province as the Minister of Development of Anhui Province. Cheng had masterplanned the Hang Hui Highway since 1922. In summer of 1932, Cheng died of a hemorrhage during the fundraising for the Hui Huang Highway. Cheng’s effort to propel China onto the course of the modern age will be remembered forever.
