A relentless Red force looms, ready to strip her home bare. Fortunately, the enduring incandescent Feng Huang, the Phoenix, has kept her amused and protected as a secret guardian, at least for now.
Written in the genre-defining style now called “Mystical Realism”, Cheng has tapped into the subconsciousness and beyond in search of human goodness. Cheng’s debut novel is stunningly visual, fantastical, dreamlike yet achingly real, demystifying China, as it offers a luminous insider’s view on why– and how — the Dragon roared. This is a story of metamorphosis and freedom, of madness and redemption, of humanity standing at the edge of self-destruction, and the fierce, tender hope of rebirth.

praises from the Readers
Phoenixa: The Nest. I have been cultivating a story of
magic, a story of transcendence, a story of exploring inner secrets and inner treasure. I have many magical moments and many memories. Beautiful poetry of nature, such as fireflies in a lost garden. These fireflies, the trajectory of their journey, is really the inspiration for a girl who is trapped in darkness. So, I have many moments of this magnitude or this delicacy I would like to share with you as a pearl I collected from the ocean of wisdom. So join me.

It’s a story of Phoenixa, a young girl who is learning
from her grandpa who turns to be one of the key figures of modern China. She is exactly at that moment when communism sweeps away the old system and imposes its new system, phoenixa gives us a window to that time, whether it’s considered good or bad, whatever, I find it very exciting to be taken into that civilization and see what happened at that instant..
James Budenholzer
A Girl who dreams about being a bird,
Feng Huang ,the Phoenix, with a spear.
She rises in the darkest hours
confronting the evil fast swallowing her.
She stands as the purest,
the most virtuous,
the most beautiful,
the most loyal and
the most righteous.
A peace warrior I must be,
now and forever.
Phoenixa Cheng Author Profile
People are kind of lost. I think people need to escape
People are kind of lost. I think people need to escape, learning your lineage, knowing your history. I was surprised Joanne wrote a book. Not only she wrote a book, she did these amazing illustrations, beautiful paintings inside the book… It’s about her family. We all have families. It’s very universal. You will learn a lot about China. If we know one person from each country, we will be better people. That’s the way we should have world peace in my small opinion.
Amber Tyler Chase
Phoenixa, The Nest has this quality very different from
mainstream literature out there. Definitely, young people should read this book. It deals with topics and values that are not dealt with in society, unfortunately. It’s something that will make them think and reflect about what does ‘doing good’ mean. What is evil? What is the source of evil? Where does evil come from? How do we fight evil and how do we pursue goodness? It helps you think about the spiritual dimensions. Probably the whole world is not just all about my five senses only. There is something greater…

This writing style reminds me of the Spanish author
Reading the first paragraph, I began to think this writing style reminds me of a previous book I only read this year actually by the Spanish author Gabriel Garcia Marquez, (One Hundred Years of Solitude). I see a lot of similarities. By Chapter Two, it stood out a lot more. Then I read the back cover : “The style is now called “Mystical Realism”. This is perfect. Its exactly the interesting thing. Why it’s interesting? It takes us through past, present and future all within a couple of lines… a huge emphasis on families and ancestors.
