New York-based seasoned intercultural critic, author and filmmaker J.J. Cheng presents” COSMIC LIGHTBEINGS – A Symphony of Celestial Harmony”, as seen in the fused creation of paintings, poetry, and calligraphy by American artist Randall DiGiuseppe and the renowned 85-year-old, exiled Chinese poet–artist Huang Xiang—yes, all on one, singular canvas. Cheng discovers within their work a vibrant phoenix — the nursery of stars — on one of the eighteen large canvases on view at the “Nocturnes: A Collaboration of the Cosmos,” exhibition at Atelier at Flowerfield Gallery in New York ( Exhibition on View from Oct 10th to Oct, 31st, 2025) The film captures Cheng’s encounters and dialogues with the artists, who explore existential questions of our relationship with the outer world, life and death, and the universal pursuit of freedom and personal sovereignty against autocracy. Listen — and read between the lines — of the rebellious poems of Huang Xiang, rendered by the aging but youthful, philosophical, and ethereal performative artist himself on-site of the Gallery studio. His nearly three-decade exile is nothing short of a miracle, sustained by the lifelong love and devotion of his soulmate and wife, Yulan, Zhang Ling, both born in China.
